Recipe for making Italian meatballs and gravy:
Ingredients:
For the Meatballs:
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 pound ground pork
- 1 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 large eggs
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil for frying
For the Gravy (Tomato Sauce):
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh oregano, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions:
1. Make the Meatballs:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, chopped parsley, eggs, salt, and pepper.
- Mix the ingredients until well combined. If the mixture seems too wet, you can add more breadcrumbs.
- Form the mixture into meatballs, about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides. Make sure they are cooked through.
2. Make the Gravy:
- In a separate pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and garlic, and sautΓ© until they become translucent.
- Add crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, fresh basil, fresh oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
- Once the meatballs are cooked, transfer them to the pot with the tomato sauce. Simmer for an additional 15-20 minutes, allowing the meatballs to absorb the flavors of the sauce.
3. Serve:
- Serve the meatballs with the tomato sauce over cooked pasta or with crusty bread. Optionally, you can sprinkle additional Parmesan cheese and fresh herbs on top before serving.
Enjoy your delicious Italian meatballs and gravy!
