Steak Pizzaiola is a classic Italian-American dish featuring tender steak smothered in a rich tomato sauce with peppers and onions. Here’s a simple recipe to make it:
Ingredients:
- 4 beef steaks (such as sirloin or ribeye), about 6 ounces each
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 1 bell pepper (red or green), thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
- Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, for serving)
Instructions:
- Season the steaks generously with salt and pepper on both sides.
- In a large skillet or frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Once the oil is hot, add the steaks to the skillet and cook until browned on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side for medium-rare, depending on thickness. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add a little more olive oil if needed. Add the sliced onions and bell peppers. Cook until they start to soften, about 5 minutes.
- Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, dried basil, and crushed red pepper flakes. Stir well to combine.
- Return the steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the tomato mixture. Spoon some of the sauce over the steaks.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the steaks simmer in the sauce for about 10-15 minutes, or until the steaks are cooked to your desired level of doneness and the sauce has thickened slightly.
- Once done, remove the skillet from the heat. Sprinkle chopped parsley over the top for garnish, if desired.
- Serve the steak pizzaiola hot, either on its own or with your choice of side dishes, such as pasta, mashed potatoes, or crusty bread. Optionally, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese over the top before serving.
