Making homemade dulce de leche is a delightful process that results in a rich and creamy caramel-like sauce. Here’s a simple recipe to make it:
Ingredients:
- 1 can (14 ounces) of sweetened condensed milk
Instructions:
- Preparation: Remove the label from the can of sweetened condensed milk.
- Boiling Method: There are a few methods to make dulce de leche, one of the most common being boiling the can. Place the unopened can of sweetened condensed milk in a large pot and cover it completely with water, ensuring the water level is at least 1-2 inches above the can.
- Boiling: Bring the water to a gentle boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer. Simmer for 2 to 3 hours, making sure to check the water level periodically and adding more hot water as needed to keep the can submerged.
- Cooling: After simmering, carefully remove the can from the water using tongs and allow it to cool completely at room temperature. Do not attempt to open the can while it’s hot, as it can be dangerous.
- Opening the Can: Once the can has cooled completely, open it with a can opener. You’ll find that the condensed milk has transformed into a thick, caramel-colored dulce de leche.
- Storing: Transfer the dulce de leche to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
- Enjoy: Use the dulce de leche as a topping for desserts like ice cream, pancakes, waffles, or spread it on toast for a delicious treat.
Note: Be cautious while boiling the can to make sure it remains submerged in water at all times. Allowing the can to become exposed to air could lead to it exploding due to the pressure build-up from the heat. Alternatively, you can pour the sweetened condensed milk into a heatproof dish and cover it with foil, then proceed to bake it in a water bath at a low temperature (around 325Β°F or 160Β°C) for 1.5 to 2 hours until it thickens and caramelizes. This method eliminates the risk of the can exploding.
