The aroma of freshly baked bread wafting through the kitchen is one of life’s simple pleasures, and making it yourself adds a touch of personal satisfaction. This homemade bread recipe captures the essence of comfort food with its soft, tender crumb and golden, crispy crust. The process begins with activating the yeast, which infuses the dough with life, ensuring it rises to perfection.
Ingredients:
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ teaspoons salt
- 1 ¼ cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
Instructions:
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Mix the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until the dough starts to come together.
- Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, a tablespoon at a time.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning it once to coat it with oil. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the Dough: Punch down the risen dough to release any air bubbles. Turn it out onto a floured surface and shape it into a loaf. Place the shaped dough into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
- Second Rise: Cover the pan with a damp cloth or plastic wrap and let the dough rise again in a warm place for about 30-45 minutes, or until it has risen slightly above the edge of the pan.
- Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
