Ingredients:
- 2 slices of your favorite bread (sourdough, ciabatta, or a hearty white bread work well)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend of your choice)
- Optional additions: sliced tomatoes, cooked bacon, caramelized onions, or ham
Instructions:
- Prepare the Bread:
- Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
- Add Cheese:
- Place the shredded cheese evenly over the unbuttered side of one slice of bread.
- Optional Additions:
- If you’re adding extras like tomatoes, bacon, onions, or ham, place them on top of the cheese.
- Top with the Second Slice:
- Place the second slice of bread on top, buttered side facing out.
- Preheat the Pan:
- Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Grill the Sandwich:
- Carefully place the sandwich in the preheated pan. Cook until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese has melted. This usually takes about 3-4 minutes per side.
- Flip the Sandwich:
- Once the bottom is golden brown, carefully flip the sandwich using a spatula.
- Finish Cooking:
- Cook the other side until it’s also golden brown and the cheese is completely melted.
- Serve:
- Remove the grilled cheese from the pan and let it cool for a minute before slicing. This allows the cheese to set slightly, making it easier to cut without everything oozing out.
